“Pourover” | #16 – May 25, 2023

I started sketching this around when I first started becoming more interested in brewing coffee at home. Which, like many, was during the 2020 pandemic – and also, like many, was largely facilitated by the wonderfully charismatic coffee YouTuber, James Hoffman. Without intending it to, manually brewing a pourover soon became my morning routine – one I continue enjoying to this day!

This comic is also the first one I’m posting that was edited using Krita, a free & open-source painting program I’ve been trying out! I’m really enjoying it so far.

This is inspired by the general sentiment of the era we’re currently living in.

I pattern-interrupted so hard in the last comic, it took me a year to make the next one! I have several rough drafts sketched out that I plan to finish in the upcoming weeks. Stay tuned!

Also contemplating changing the comic’s font – what do you think? I’ll have the previous font in the full post below to compare:

“Pattern Interrupt” | #14 – March 25, 2022

“Pattern interrupts” are an interesting topic I wanted to try and convey through comic form at some point, but then this silly idea entered my mind. I wanted to try and note it down too, while still thinking about different ways I might be able to simply convey the idea in a different comic in the future.

It’s an idea I find personally helpful when I’m feeling “stuck or in a rut,” but this little comic doesn’t really explain what it is (though it is fun to have stuck in my head for some reason).

The idea behind the comic is to represent the “pattern interrupt” through colors – Duskbirds comics are usually in a sepia or desaturated tone. The idea was to have the final panel a strikingly different color, to represent this “interrupting” the pattern of the comic.

It essentially means if you’re feeling stuck, or frustrated – whether with a task you’re doing, or even in the job or stage of life you’re in – trying something different from what you’re used to can help shake your mind up, and help you figure out what you need to do next to feel less frustrated or stuck in what you’re doing.

Edit: I tried out an idea attempting to use colors to convey the idea! I think it has potential, but I think the color choices need work. Possibly I’ll edit another try in the future!

I’ll post the earlier version in the full entry below for fun:
